Senator LaPhonza Butler has introduced legislation in the California State Senate to honor the late Representative Shirley Chisholm with a Congressional Gold Medal and statue. The bill, Senate Joint Resolution 3 (SJR 3), is co-authored by Senators Steven Bradford, Sydney Kamlager, and Assemblymembers Wendy Carrillo and Autumn Burke. Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to Congress and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, is being recognized for her contributions to the Civil Rights movement, and her advocacy for education, healthcare, and labor rights.
